Despite cancellation hanging over Marvel's THE PUNISHER like a looming Sword of Damocles, Netflix's blood, sweat and bullets series showrunner, Steve Lightfoot, remains hopeful that Frank will be granted a third season in which to dole out his signature brand of vigilante justice. Recently, Lightfoot sat down for a burning trash can fireside chat with ComicBook.com, wherein they discussed the nice and tidy nature of the sophomore season's finale, as well as would-be plans for a Season 3 renewal.
"I mean, look, the end of season two, that final image was meant to say, very much, 'Look, Frank is now The Punisher,'" Lightfoot told the entertainment outlet. "And hopefully people were like, 'I can't wait for season three, you know, come back and see what the hell he's up to.'"
When pressed for more details related to Frank's whereabouts at the start of a third season, Lightfoot explained, "I think, the idea I have is very much back in the city," The producer then continued by saying, "The theme is seeing Frank, now he has fully embraced the mantle of The Punisher, where that takes him and what problems that throws up for him as he follows that path. I can't say much more than that really. But yeah, we're hoping we get the good word and we go ahead and dive back in."
While fans of Marvel's grunt-happy, gun-toting anti-hero are holding out hope for a Season 3 renewal, I regret to report that Netflix has yet to grant THE PUNISHER another round of violently-good times. The status of THE PUNISHER also remains grim on account of that, over the past few months, the streaming giant has passed on renewing other Marvel programs the likes of IRON FIST, LUKE CAGE, and even DAREDEVIL – whose third season is considered by many to be among the best of the bunch. That being said, perhaps the fact that the proverbial sword has yet to fall on THE PUNISHER can be taken as a positive sign?
Would you like to see Marvel's THE PUNISHER continue on Netflix, or do you suspect that, at any given moment, a cancellation of the show will be issued? My money is on THE PUNISHER going the way of the dodo within a week or so. Granted, I don't want that to happen, but if we're being honest about the recent pattern of Marvel/Netflix relations, well … yeah.
