True Believers, it's time to get your creative juices flowing, as Sony Pictures Imageworks has just announced that OpenColorIO, a tool used for color management during the production process, has just been made available for free to up-and-coming creators. The digital implement used in films like SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS will undoubtedly provide artists with new and exciting ways to bring their impassioned projects to the world stage, particularly for a section of the industry that thrives on ingenuity capturing the eyes and hearts of millions.
“We want to contribute OpenColorIO back to the community that relies on it, and the Academy Software Foundation is the natural fit,” said Sony Pictures Imageworks vice president and head of software development Michael Ford. “The developers and companies that use it every day will guide the project road map, starting with the features and release cadence for the new 2.0 version.”
In the past, Sony Pictures Imageworks has allowed portions of their OpenColorIO software to be made available to the public free of charge, hoping to encourage the filmmakers of tomorrow to broaden their horizons by exploring the tool's unique functions. If you're still confused as to why the tool is considered by many to be so special, you need only look to the dynamic color work seen in Sony's SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE for a multitude of glorious examples.
Wait. You're still here? As your attorney I advise you to secure your own version of OpenColorIO via the Academy Software Foundation and get crackin! After all, the Oscar-nominated animated films of tomorrow aren't going to make themselves. Plus, it's free! You can't say that about too many things nowadays, amiright? So get out there, and color your next project like a pro.
