New trailer for Amazon’s Hanna laces action with grounded storytelling

With the first Superman movie you believed a man could fly, and now with the new show HANNA you’ll believe a young girl can beat the hell out of armed thugs with a few kicks. Of course, that sounds awesome, but the new series from Amazon has more going for it than just some sleek action, and the new trailer promises some intense, grounded thrills to go along with all the swift kicks.

Starring Esme Creed-Miles as Hanna alongside Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, this official trailer certainly expands on the action-heavy teasers from the past month or so, alluding to more of the character-centric details that will make up the heavier elements of the story. That might win over viewers who aren’t sure about investing in something that may come off like a carbon copy of the 2011 movie from Joe Wright (starring Saoirse Ronan) and are looking for something that adds more meat to the story.

The first episode was made available to watch on Amazon Prime, and so far the early reviews have been solid, with some critics praising the action and a grounded storyline that sets it apart from the movie. Our own Alex Maidy was on the fence about the show, saying the first episode doesn’t deliver on the promises of an action-thriller, despite some promising elements. Here's the synopsis:

Raised in total seclusion in the remote woods of Eastern Europe, 15-year-old Hanna (Esmé Creed-Miles) has spent her entire young life training to fight those who hunt her and her mercenary father, Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman). Her survivalist skills are finally tested when she and Erik are separated upon their discovery by a rogue CIA operative, Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos) and her team of agents. Hanna has no choice but to embark on a perilous journey alone across Europe as she seeks to reunite with her father and evade – and ultimately take down – the dangerous agents who target them. Hanna’s isolated upbringing leads her to face particularly daunting physical and emotional challenges along the way, as she navigates an ever-deepening conspiracy – one that could be the undoing of both her and her father.

HANNA begins airing episodes regularly starting March 29.
