Star Trek: Discovery cast say the season 2 finale will change everything

Star Trek: Discovery

Since the beginning, Star Trek: Discovery has been under fire for its approach to Star Trek canon; while certain elements definitely connect, others do not, but executive producer Alex Kurtzman has long promised that everything will come together in the end. During Star Trek; Discovery's recent PaleyFest panel, Kurtzman told Syfy Wire that an answer is coming.

We are entirely aware of everyone’s questions and criticisms; I’ve read everything, and I see where everyone’s like, ‘Well, the spore drive never existed!’ and ‘What, Discovery was never around!’ and all of those things, we’re totally aware. You will get an answer.

As far as that answer being satisfying to Star Trek fans, Kurtzman said, "I damn well think so, yes." According to Anthony Rapp, who plays Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, that answer could come by the end of the season. "I think that the last few episodes will really close the circle for people. If we’ve done our job, what was on the page … I haven’t seen them yet, but what was on the page in the scripts, closes the circle; it answers the questions that are lingering and remaining for people of how we fit in," Rapp said. "And I believe very strongly that it will leave people satisfied. … As someone who cares about continuity, to some degree, I was like, ‘If this doesn’t make people happy, I don’t know what else we can do.'" As for what that ending will be, well, the cast seem to be preparing us for something that will change everything.

Ethan Peck (Spock) – "I personally think that the end of the season is going to be tremendous … when [Kurtzman] first told me about it I was like in tears, I just had chills… so good."

Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) – "Expect the unexpected, is what my mother always says, and it couldn’t be more true, especially on this season, cause it’ll change everything."

Doug Jones (Saru) – "As I read the final script for Season 2, my jaw dropped, and I’m dumbfounded with where we’re headed. So I think the fans can expect to boldly go where no Star Trek series has ever gone before."

I've found season two of Star Trek: Discovery to be much more enjoyable than the first (which I did like), largely thanks to the addition of Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) as Captain Pike. He's been a breath of fresh air to Discovery and has really helped to mold the crew into a more cohesive unit, but as we know, Mount won't be continuing into the third season, which honestly bums me out a bit. There's still a number of years between the current setting of Discovery and Captain Pike's ultimate fate (beep, beep) and Kurtzman once again says they will sync up with canon in regard to Pike. "If you know the story of Captain Pike, you know what his fate was. It won’t be exactly what you think this season, but we will be consistent with that story. There will be a dimension shed on that story that you will not have known or have thought of," said Kurtzman. Four episodes of Star Trek: Discovery's second season remain, so it won't be long until we can see this apparently canon-aligning yet unexpected finale for ourselves.
