The finale of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR took the concept of cinematic cliffhangers to new heights, and keeping it under wraps no doubt required some intense levels of security. The trailers have been released for the follow-up, AVENGERS: ENDGAME, and surely countless fans have tried to comb over every frame in hopes of uncovering some sort of massive detail, and even Joe Russo believes there are more spoilers this time around than the last movie. He recently opened up about protecting those juicy details, which means taking certain liberties with the footage that gets put out there.

Russo was speaking with Box Office Pro (via Collider) about the upcoming superhero epic and the importance of ensuring the experience of seeing it in a theater is a unique and special one. For INFINITY WAR, he and his co-director and brother Anthony put out a letter urging audiences to not spoil the movie for people who haven’t seen it, which is something they might do for this movie as well. As for the footage out there, this means not giving a ton of information for content savvy fans to root out, which would be easy to do given the hefty number of spoilers this time around.
“At a certain point, I’m sure we’ll write another letter this year that asks everyone to stay off the internet. I think this one has even more spoilers than the last one. This is a culture that wants everything now, and it’s getting worse. The world is connected via social media, and information travels within seconds. If you’ve been following along with this narrative for 10 years, you’re going to want to protect yourself. It’s best to go in clean. I encourage people to go opening weekend because I’m sure everything is going to hit the internet the moment the movie hits the screen.”

Ever since the most recent trailer debuted there’s been talk that some of the footage included in it will not be in the finished film at all, much like with the INFINITY WAR trailer that ended with several of the heroes running into battle right before the title emerged. One shot in the ENDGAME preview, with the team dressed in Quantum Realm suits preparing to go on a mission, is also speculated to not be in the movie, and Russo talked about how he and his brother believe it’s okay to play with the footage as a means of keeping things secret.
“That’s the feeling that my brother and I are trying to replicate for other kids who want to be surprised. It’s why we limit the amount of information in trailers. That’s why we obfuscate it. Audiences are so predictive. Everyone has a PhD in content now, and it’s constant. The smallest clue in a trailer can ruin a movie.”
In INFINITY WAR the biggest spoiler of all was the finale, wherein Thanos (*SPOILER ALERT*) snapped his fingers and half of the population turned into dust, with the death toll rising even more as a result (i.e. people in airplanes with "dusted" pilots). The heroes lost, and much of the new movie is about the remaining champions coming together to set everything right and take Thanos down once and for all. How that happens is of massive spoiler appeal, and I couldn't agree more with Russo about taking certain measures to keep them guarded, and I also encourage everyone to stay away from the internet come a few days before release.
AVENGERS: ENDGAME is in theaters April 26.
