With the end of each new season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY comes speculation over what the anthology series will tackle next, and creator Ryan Murphy has cut to the chase and released the first teaser for the ninth season. Done mostly in slo-mo as a young woman runs for her life away from a massive, masked killer a la Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers, she makes it into the cabin, slams the door shut only for a knife to come ramming through, with the title of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: 1984 coming on screen.
As you can gather, this season looks to be inspired by campy 80s slasher movies that defined that era of horror. Other seasons have tackled witch covens, circus acts, and haunted houses and hotels, with recent seasons having political leanings like AHS CULT. The most recent season, APOCALYPSE, was a crossover between MURDER HOUSE and COVEN (seasons one and three), so this one looks to get back to some bloody fun with a more purely enjoyable and frightening vibe that perhaps isn’t as heavy as the last two seasons.

I don’t love all the seasons of AHS, but with each new season comes the opportunity to deliver something fresh with a new premise and cast of characters. For me, the show works best when it’s playing with weirder, scarier material like COVEN or ROANOKE, so this seems like one I could enjoy if done right. This show isn’t one to stick to the basics of a well-worn genre, so how they approach the 80s slasher style will be interesting in of itself, if the prospect of seeing doomed young people cut down wasn’t working for you.
