Trailer for Gemini Man finds Will Smith squaring off against himself

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Where movie makeup could de-age an actor somewhat when showing that character in the past, we’re now at the point where technology can seamlessly shave decades off an actor’s life…or at least their face. We saw this implemented last with Samuel L. Jackson in CAPTAIN MARVEL, and now with the first trailer for Ang Lee’s GEMINI MAN we can see it pushed to the most extreme measures yet by having Will Smith go up against his former “Fresh Prince” self. That sounds like it could look silly as hell but watch the trailer above to see that the massive production budget has certainly been put to good use.

Marvel has used the de-aging technology before, most notably on Michael Douglas for ANT-MAN and on Robert Downey Jr. for CIVIL WAR, and it will be used at great cost to de-age actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino for Martin Scorsese’s THE IRISHMAN later this year. While those earlier Marvel movies used a less polished version of the tech, this GEMINI MAN trailer looks like it’s using it at the highest level so far. There are little areas where you can see it’s not as seamless as real life, but otherwise, it looks very authentic and recreates 90s-era Smith quite well.

As for the movie itself, the concept seems fun and will surely make audiences curious about Will Smith vs Will Smith, and the action looks top-notch. Lee proved his mastery with handling visual effects in the Oscar-winning LIFE OF PI, so you can tell he knows what he’s doing here. The director and the actor both have been hit or miss recently, so hopefully, they can come together and deliver an entertaining Fall sci-fi flick. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to have Darren Lemke (SHAZAM! story credit) GAME OF THRONES’ David Benioff and CAPTAIN PHILLPS’ Billy Ray on the script.

Here’s the synopsis:

Gemini Man is an innovative action-thriller starring Will Smith as Henry Brogan, an elite assassin, who is suddenly targeted and pursued by a mysterious young operative that seemingly can predict his every move.

GEMINI MAN is in theaters October 11.
