The animated Harley Quinn series may able to get away with certain things because it's streamed on the HBO Max platform but when it comes to Batman and Catwoman engaging in oral sex, that's where DC draws the line. Executive Producers of the series say that DC vetoed a scene of the characters engaging in such activity during season 3.
In a recent interview with "Variety", co-creators/EPS Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacher said that the comic company felt strongly that an oral sex scene featuring two of their legacy characters was not a direction they wanted to go. Here is what the executive producers had to say:
"We had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, 'You can't do that. You absolutely cannot do that.' They're like, 'Heroes don't do that.' So we said, 'Are you saying heroes are selfish lovers?' They were like, 'No, it's that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It's hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone."
I get that they're a company that also needs to sell toys to consumers but I wish they came up with a better excuse than "heroes don't do that." I think I would've laughed at them if that was the reason I was given. Simply say it's just going to work but I imagine that a higher-up at DC got really nervous and weird about it and had no idea what to really say to nix the idea. The last time I checked, heroes still have needs too but I digress.
On Harley Quinn, a single Harley Quinn sets off to make it on her own in Gotham City. The titular character is voiced by Kaley Cuoco and it is an animated series for adults but I guess even cartoons for adults have their limits. Schumacher and Halpern have noted that DC has allowed the series' storytelling to push its limits many times but it looks like they finally hit a wall they couldn't breakthrough.
Harley Quinn was picked up for a third season in September on the HBO Max streaming service after its season 2 finale aired on DC Universe, which has since evolved into a comics-only platform. In addition to Cuoco, the animated series features the vocal talent of Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Jason Alexander, Diedrich Bader, Christopher Meloni, and J.B. Smoove.
Do YOU think it was right of DC to veto the Batman and Catwoman oral sex scene?
