Highlander: Henry Cavill in talks to star in Chad Stahelski-directed reboot

Lionsgate's Highlander reboot is looking for Henry Cavill to be "the one" to star in its reboot of the classic sci-fi action extravaganza. The project has John Wick's Chad Stahelski in the director's chair with Neal H. Mortiz, Josh Davis, and David Leitch producing. Amanda Lewis, Patrick Wachsberger, and Gregory Widen will exec produce.

Released in 1986 and directed by Russell Mulcahy, Highlander centers on an immortal Scottish swordsman, who must confront the last of his immortal opponents, a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the fabled "Prize." It starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, Rozanne Hart as Brenda Wyatt, Clancy Brown as Kurgan, and Sean Connery as Ramirez. The film was a major hit with science-fiction and fantasy fans and went on to spawn four sequels and three television series.

No details related to the plot have been revealed at this time, nor do we know if Cavill will play a new character or one from the existing Highlander universe. Apparently, Lionsgate has been looking to get a new Highlander film up on screens for quite some time. In fact, reports indicate that talent the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Justin Lin had been attached at one point or another. Obviously, that version of the plan never panned out, and now we've got Stahelski's version with Cavill to look forward to instead. That's a fair trade if you ask me.

Not long after the news broke, Cavill posted the following message to his official Instagram account:

As you can clearly see from Cavill's post, he's extremely excited about joining the effort to bring Highlander back into the fold. What can we say? The man loves his swords and exploring fantastic worlds brimming with possibility. I say bring it on, and if there can only be one, I'm glad it's Henry Cavill.
