After several delays due to COVID-19, it seems that production on Shazam: Fury of the Gods has finally begun. Director David F. Sandberg took to Instagram to share an image of his "Shazamcam" and confirmed that they're been "filming for a few days." You can check out the post for yourself below.
When asked in the comments section if Zachary Levi would be receiving a new Shazam suit for the sequel, David F. Sandberg merely replied, "Yes." When another fan asked why they were shooting the movie now when the release is over two years away, Sandberg said, "Because of all the other DC movies that they want to release first. Can’t release them all at once." Zachary Levi also took to Instagram to celebrate the start of production by showing off his Shazam-inspired sneakers.
The finale of Shazam! introduced the Shazam family as Billy Batson's foster family, which includes Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, and Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, were transformed into superheroes themselves. We didn't get to see all that much of this family of superheroes, but that will change with the sequel. During a fan Q&A at DC FanDome last year, director David F. Sandberg says that the Shazam family will "definitely" be more involved in the upcoming sequel.
Now they’re all superheroes, they’re all a family with superpowers. And now we finally get to see that. We only got a glimpse of that in the first movie, so that’s something to look forward to.
Much of the original cast have returned for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, but a few of the new additions include Helen Mirren (F9), Lucy Liu (Elementary), and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story). Shazam: Fury of the Gods is currently slated for a June 2, 2023 release.
