Venom – What’s the difference between the comics and film?

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Comic book fans are always on the lookout for the differences between the stories they've read and the movies that bring them to life, more often than not finding some major differences. These changes can be small or sometimes quite drastic to the point of ruining the material and making you hate the world and everything in it. But for those who aren't as familiar with comics, you may need a guide in figuring out how the movies change things up from the comics, and we are JoBlo are ready to be that guide for you. In this new video series we will be examining comic book movies and the source material they're based on, and to kick things off we will be taking a look back at last year's breakout hit, VENOM.

The first movie in a planned line of Marvel movies from Sony, VENOM introduced the long-running Spider-Man antagonist to moviegoing audiences with Tom Hardy in the lead role. Venom had only been featured in the movie SPIDER-MAN 3 prior to this, but like everyone else, this movie acts as though that never happened. Taking from the "Lethal Protector" and "Planet of the Symbiotes" storylines in the comics, the movie introduced Venom as a bit of an anti-hero who saves the day but has no qualms with biting off criminals' heads.

Obviously, there were some changes made from page to screen, and in this new video we break down the biggest changes, like how the symbiote was brought to earth, the total absence of Spider-Man, as well as the expansion of some characters and the nixing of others. For newcomers to comics, it will be a helpful education that may even inspire you to seek out the comics, and for longtime comic book fans, it's a further reminder of all the cool stuff that finds its way onto the cutting room floor.
