In just under a month the X-Men will take to the big screen for the last time…at least for a little while as Disney decides what to do with their newly acquired superhero property. To really get fans excited for this new outing it was announced this morning that fans will get to celebrate X-Men Day this Monday, May 13, which will officially kick off advance ticket sales for the new movie, DARK PHOENIX.

The news was announced this morning that 20th Century Fox will kick off the day with the “debut of exclusive X-Men content, special events, and unexpected surprises.” What those debuts and surprises relate to we can only speculate (new comics run? Movie announcements?), but whatever it is it’s meant to get fans of all things mutant excited for whatever the future has in store for the team.

Here’s the full statement:

Mark your calendars for Monday, May 13, when 20th Century Fox will kick off X-Men Day – a celebration of the culmination of the X-Men saga, its global fanbase, all the beloved characters, its groundbreaking impact on popular culture and enduring audience appeal for nearly 20 years. On Monday, fan celebrations of all things X-Men will happen online and all over the world including the debut of exclusive X-Men content, special events, and unexpected surprises for our most loyal fans. X-Men Day will honor the legacy of the X-Men franchise and kick off advance ticket sales for DARK PHOENIX. For more information, follow X-Men Movies (@XMenMovies) on social media!

Along with the announcement came the debut of a new poster for the movie, sporting a design that's always better than the typical Photoshopped fare.

And to make this whole thing feel weirder than it should, here's Disney's tweet confirming the plans for X-Men Day. Didn't think you'd see that before a year ago, right?

Ever since Disney officially bought out 20th Century Fox fans have been speculating as to the future of the X-Men series. A recent announcement listed numerous release dates for future projects from both studios, including a confirmed April 2020 slot for the long-delayed NEW MUTANTS, as well as a lack of news for the long-gestating Gambit movie with Channing Tatum, signifying it’s basically dead in the water. As for the main team of X-Men, everything is still a bit up in the air, with no news pertaining to any sort of reboot or intro to the MCU…yet.

No matter, DARK PHOENIX is what's on the horizon, and while nothing I've seen from the trailers gives me much hope this team that started in FIRST CLASS will go out on a high note, I hope against hope I leave the theater surprised. The cast is still great, and maybe there's more to the movie that the trailers just aren't nailing. Maybe Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) does more than lift a train, perhaps?

DARK PHOENIX stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain and is in theaters June 7.
