Last month I traveled to Tokyo, Japan to check out a few monsters, namely a giant green one that topples cities and a small, cute one that electrocutes you with cuteness. Yes, I'm talking about POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU and GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (more on that one a little later). While there we learned to make sushi and origami, visited a traditional Japanese garden and explored the amazing city that is Tokyo. It was a head-spinning journey (which you can check out in pic form below) and made all the better by the fact that I got to see a few cool movies and talk to some cool people. For POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU I got to chat with the always charismatic, charming and really, really ridiculously good-looking Ryan Reynolds, who explains just how in the hell he is now the voice of Deadpool AND Pikachu, what it's like being in a movie his kids want to (and can) see. I also ask him if Deadpool can play nice over at Disney and we both agreed to riot if they try to change his unhinged ways.
Next up, I spoke with Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton, both of whom know their Pokemon well. Smith (JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM) brought along a friend for the interview (as did I, of course) and we chatted about the resonance of being in such a well-known, worldwide franchise like Pokemon and Newton (BLOCKERS) shares which Pokemon character backpack she had in high school, as well as crying after seeing the first trailer for the film. We snuck in a picture at the end and Newton takes the selfie reins.
Lastly, I spoke to director Rob Letterman, who gave some insight into bringing Pokemon into the live-action realm and why Ryan Reynolds was the right guy to take on the role of Pikachu. He also sheds some light on how they chose which Pokemon to feature in the film (over 60 in all).
I had a blast with the film (read my review HERE) and predict a very healthy box office and the start of a film franchise that will continue for years to come. Whether you're a fan or not, POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU is an easy-to-digest, bitingly cute and cuddly flick that caters to all viewers. Check it out in theaters NOW!
