After years of subpar sequels in the Terminator series the sixth outing, TERMINATOR: DARK FATE, is looking to turn the tide and deliver a worthy follow-up – or at least one that isn’t dreadful and makes us question why this series is still a thing. James Cameron is back in the saddle as producer while DEADPOOL’s Tim Miller directing, with returning vets Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the mix as well, and after months of getting pictures of everyone looking all badass and ready to throw down the first trailer is finally here to tease the series’ (hopeful) return to glory.

Joining the duo are series newcomers Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna and Natalia Reyes, with Davis playing Grace, the latest cyber-enhanced assassin/soldier who is sent back to save someone, this time in Reyes’ Dani. On their trail is Luna’s new Terminator figure, who makes Robert Patrick’s liquid metal from T2 look like a Capri-Sun commercial, being able to duplicate himself out of bits of silver goo. This first trailer is all about the two going head-to-head and it all feels very reminiscent of T2, but far more stylish and sleek.
Early speculation around Davis' character being an enhanced human rather than an android like Schwarzenegger's in the previous film seem to be confirmed, pretty much on the nose when she tells Sarah Connor, "I am human." Hamilton doesn't look like she's skipped a beat either and even though he doesn't say a word it's just great seeing Schwarzenegger there, all bearded and ready to say something cool. And all of it is done to a slow, more haunting take on Bjork's "Hunter", which is quite the deep cut, and it works.

All in all, it looks pretty fun at the very least, and it doesn't seem as clunky and rooted in complicated mythology-building as the others. While it looks glossy and expensive the story at its core seems relatively simple, which is a great move if you want to get people back into the series or hook the new generation.
TERMINATOR: DARK FATE is in theaters November 1.
