Sony announces Boondocks reboot, Anthony Bourdain’s Hungry Ghosts series

Sony confirmed that they understand the concept of "game recognizes game" on Wednesday, when they announced at the Annecy Festival 2019 that they'll be collaborating with THE BOONDOCKS creator Aaron McGruder to reboot the series. Co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, THE BOONDOCKS reboot will update the series to take place in a contemporary setting, with the Freeman family matching attitudes and expletives with a nefarious local government tyrant by the name of Uncle Rukus, who lords over the fictional burg of Woodcrest County, Maryland with malice and an iron grip.

In additon to bringing THE BOONDOCKS up to speed for a modern-day tussel in the hood, the studio also plans to adapt the late Anthony Bourdain's horror comic book anthology series HUNGRY GHOSTS, which conjures up culinary-inspired ghost stories with both a sinister and comedic twist. Each episode of the series will set itself apart from the show's previous chapter, both in its visual presentation as well as tone. Sadly, Bourdain died of suicide on June 8, 2018, while visiting Kaysersberg-Vignoble, France. Hailed as a legend throughout the culinary community, Bourdain's death took many by surprise, and left the world of cooking television entertainment without one of its greatest players. Bourdain co-wrote the Hungry Ghosts comic book series with Joel Rose for Dark Horse Comics. The series featured stunning and haunting art by both Alberto Ponticelli and Vanesa Del Ray, with colors by Jose Villarrubia.

On a dark, haunted night, a Russian oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the samurai game of 100 Candles–where each storyteller spins a terrifying tale of ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings–and prays to survive the challenge. 

Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food.

First course: With bad consequence, a ramen chef refuses to help a beggar, and a band of pirates get more (and less) than they were bargaining for after their encounter with a drowning woman turns ghastly.

In addition to Sony's THE BOONDOCKS reboot and the adaptation of Bourdain's HUNGRY GHOSTS series, the studio also announced two new projects from SAMURAI JACK creator and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA director Genndy Tartakovsky. The first is an R-rated animated featured called FIXED, which The Wrap reports is "about a dog living his last night up as a bachelor upon learning he’s getting neutered the next day." The second is an original, action-adventure epic titled BLACK KNIGHT, which "tells the story of a highly skilled and faithful knight who, after failing to protect his king, must transform himself into the Black Knight to save the kingdom."

Lastly, SPA Alternative confirmed they are developing a new series dubbed SUPERBAGO, which is billed as a joint effort between SPA and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. Originally planned as a feature for Sony Animation, SUPERBAGO will be a half-hour comedy that blends Claymation and live-action and "follows the adventures of two dimwitted animated heroes traveling in a very real Winnebago around the actual United States of America."
