Jon Favreau on the advice George Lucas gave him on The Mandalorian

The first episode of The Mandalorian will premiere when Disney+ launches on November 12, 2019, telling the tale of a lone gunfighter (Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. While speaking with Jimmy Kimmel, The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau said, "It’s after Return of the Jedi, so the Empire is gone and all hell is breaking loose in the Outer Rim. And it’s about the scum and villainy, that once you take out the rule of law, what happens? Chaos takes over and you have all of these unseemly characters." In an effort to get back to what made STAR WARS so great in the first place, Favreau sought the advice of George Lucas himself.

"We had a long talk with each other," said Favreau while speaking with GQ Middle East recently. "One thing he said to me was, ’remember, Jon, the real audience for all stories and all myths is the kids that are coming of age’, because he’s really a Joseph Campbell adherent… We enjoy the stories as adults, but really, storytelling is about imparting the wisdom of the previous generations on to the children who are becoming adults, and giving them a context for how to behave and how to learn the lessons of the past without making the mistakes on their own. That’s the hope, that you can teach them how to avoid all the hardship but garner all the wisdom." We still have a few months to see if Lucas' advice has paid off, but Favreau is obviously feeling confident as he's already working on the second season of The Mandalorian.

Along with Pedro Pascal as the titular bounty hunter, The Mandalorian also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Taika Waititi, and Werner Herzog.
