Before he dips his toes back into the world of AQUAMAN for the highly-anticipated sequel director James Wan is getting back to basics with a new horror movie. The horror maestro has been doing a lot of work within the CONJURING franchise for Warner Bros. after kicking the series off with the first 2013 hit, but Wan has come out and said this new project will be an original idea that will take him back to his roots.

It was reported last week that Wan’s next directorial project would be a secret horror movie for New Line Cinema, but no details were divulged other than he was working on the story with fiancé and actress, Ingrid Bisu. But over the weekend Wan took to Facebook and wrote in a now-deleted post (via Bloody Disgusting) that it will be a unique idea filled with the bloody bits he got his career going with.

“There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets. That’s all I’ll say for now. ”

Wan broke onto the scene with the bloody hit SAW (conceived with writer Leigh Whannell, and which launched a franchise of its own) before heading into movies like DEAD SILENCE and INSIDIOUS, leading him to the CONJURING and superstardom. Since then he’s tackled huge projects like FURIOUS 7 and AQUAMAN, both grossing over $1 billion worldwide, with his last horror movie, THE CONJURING 2, fitting in between the two.

Wan has had his plate full producing a ton of projects, including this year’s THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA, ANNABELLE COMES HOME, next year’s MORTAL KOMBAT, and all before getting back into the water for AQUAMAN 2, which is set for December 2022. That’s to say the man’s been busy, so it’s great he’s working on something more low-key and gets him back into his most familiar territory. As great of a job he did with AQUAMAN the man has horror in his veins, so surely fans of his will are just as excited to see what he comes up with as he is getting back into the blood and guts.
