Everyone was quite excited when it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that THOR: RAGNAROK director Taika Waititi would be returning for THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, but before Waititi heads back to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he'll be tackling another project first.
Variety has reported that Taika Waititi will direct a mysterious new project for Fox Searchlight, but that's about all we know at the moment. Sneaky. Before Waititi was signed on to helm THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, he was expected to helm an adaptation of "Akira" for Warner Bros., but as Marvel wants the director to start shooting the THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER early next year, there just wasn't enough time to give both projects the focus they needed. However, it seems that there is enough time to slip in a smaller project. As a rabid Waititi fan, I'm certainly down for more. Production on the mystery film is said to be kicking off this fall.
As far as THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER goes, the sequel will not only feature the return of Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), but also Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), who will be taking on the mantle of Mightly Thor this time around. Before Waititi's return to the MCU, he'll bring us JOJO RABBIT, an anti-hate satire which follows a young German boy during World War II whose imaginary friend is Adolf Hitler.
The official synopsis for JOJO RABBIT:
Writer director Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE), brings his signature style of humor and pathos to his latest film. JOJO RABBIT, a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers that his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must confront his naïve patriotism.
JOJO RABBIT will hit theaters on October 18, 2019, while THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER is slated for a November 5, 2021 release.
