Everyone knows that it's going to be a while until we see characters likes of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool arrive as part of the MCU, but when the time comes, who will be at the helm of welcoming these legends to the fold? Honestly, your guess is as good as mine, but recently, the Russo Brothers participated in a Reddit AMA courtesy of the Marvel Studios subreddit that got some fans pretty excited about the future of the MCU.
The fevered thread attracted over 5,000 comments and questions, one of which resulted in the Russos mentioning Marvel's mutton chopped mutant, Wolverine. During the session, a Reddit user by the name of ethanplem asked the dynamic director duo: Which superhero's movie that is not currently in the mcu would you guys most want to direct in the future?
To which Anthony Russo responded: "We've always loved us some Wolverine."
Now, I know what you're thinking. That's it? That's the reason I clicked on this article? And to that I say damn right! Because while there are no immediate plans for Marvel to release another feature starring beer-swilling, Canadian badass, there's always a chance that the Russos could be courted for an MCU return, given the right project.
In fact, back in April, the brothers Russo told Games Radar:
"We don’t have any plans for now to make any more Marvel movies. It certainly may come up in the future at some point. We have a wonderful working relationship with [Marvel Studios] and a great passion for what they’re doing."
Right, so imagine if that project was a film that centered on Wolverine? Or, better yet, an X-Men-related epic that included Marvel's frenzied and fuzzy fiend-slicer. I know I'm snickting at straws over here, but anything is possible when it comes to the future of the MCU.
Up next for the Russos is CHERRY, a drama starring Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. The film is an adaptation of the national bestselling novel of the same name by Nico Walker. In the true life story based on Walker's own life, the author tells of his time as a former Army medic who returned from Iraq with extreme undiagnosed PTSD, and how he fell into opioid addiction and began robbing banks.
What do you think? Would you be down for a Wolverine-focused film helmed by Joe and Anthony Russo? Or, are you tired of Wolverine films and would rather see them sink their fangs into something new? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
