Kristen Wiig & Annie Mumolo’s Barb and Star comedy gets July 2020 release

BRIDESMAIDS alumni Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are re-teaming to add some heat to the summer of 2020 when their new Lionsgate comedy, BARB AND STAR GO TO THE VISTA DEL MAR, hits theaters.

Now scheduled for a July 31, 2020 release, the film revolves around best friends that leave their small Midwestern town for the first time to go on vacation in Vista Del Mar, Florida, where they soon find themselves tangled up in adventure, love and a villain’s evil plot to kill everyone in town.

Naturally, Wiig and Mumolo will star as the film's vacation-bound besties, with Jamie Dornan (THE FALL, A PRIVATE WAR, MARIE ANTOINETTE) and Damon Wayans Jr. (BIG HERO 6, THE OTHER GUYS) also set to appear in the sun-drenched comedy. Meanwhile, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Jessica Elbaum will produce.

Additionally, Wiig and Mumolo wrote the screenplay for the project, which has FRESH OFF THE BOAT and NEW GIRL helmer Josh Greenbaum in line to direct as his feature debut.

Their projects offer a rare combination of big laughs, big heart, and female empowerment that everyone will love — men and women, young and old,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane previously said about the project. “Barb and Star are true cultural icons in the making, and as they embark on this hilarious adventure, we are more than thrilled to partner with Kristen, Annie and Gloria Sanchez on what we know is going to be a great ride.”

The film will be up against some stiff competition with Sony's MORBIUS set to take a bite out of the box office on the same day. MORBIUS, as directed by Daniel Espinosa, stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a biochemist who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. The Morbius character hails from Sony's Spider-verse initiative.
