Over 11 years ago the Marvel Cinematic Universe was kicked off with 2008’s IRON MAN, and even then, the people at Marvel had no idea the series would become what it has today. They certainly didn’t think they would ever get a chance to use characters like Spider-Man (licensed by Sony) or the X-Men (20th Century Fox), but that didn’t stop them from dreaming big. In a newly released post-credits scene, we get to see that Marvel at least played with the idea of getting all these characters together – using the great Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury to do it.

At the 45th annual Saturn Awards on Saturday night, Marvel’s Kevin Feige was the recipient of the first-ever Stan Lee World Builder award, and it was then the MCU mastermind unveiled the deleted scene. The unveiling comes as Feige teased it as just one unseen piece of footage that will be included in the upcoming Infinity Saga box set. “We pulled some things out of that vault that we said, ‘We’ll never show this to anybody, put it away,'” Feige said before the scene. “We’re bringing them out, we’re putting them on this disc, and I’m about to show you a deleted scene that has never been seen by anyone before right now.”

This unused take shot along with the one that would eventually make its way to the end credits of IRON MAN – wherein Jackson’s Fury introduces himself to Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) – finds the head of S.H.I.E.L.D teasing some of the other super-powered beings in the world.

Of course, we all know what happened just a few years later. After solidifying itself as a force to be reckoned with, the MCU was finally able to use Spider-Man, recasting Tom Holland in the role and debuting him in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. The character made appearances in two solo movies and the last two AVENGERS flicks, but now he won't be making any more appearances in the series after Sony and Disney couldn't come to new terms. Coincidentally, thanks to Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox, Marvel can start using the mutant heroes (and villains) whenever they see fit.

As Feige said, this is just one interesting little piece of footage that will finally get to see the light of day on the Infinity Saga box set, so we can only wonder what else has been hidden inside that vault all those years.
