Stallone offers updates on Cobra reboot and Tango & Cash 2

With RAMBO: LAST BLOOD poised to wage war on the box office this Friday, it will soon be time for Sylvester Stallone to set his sights on a few other nostalgia-driven projects. Recently while speaking with the box office behemoth for his latest turn as the Italian Navajo-born veteran, Fandango's own Nikki Novak learned that Stallone is in talks to bring at least two of his beloved '80s properties back for another round of violence, one-liners, and matchstick-sucking goodness.

What manner of sorcery is this, you ask? Well, it sounds as if Stallone has been speaking with MACHETE and PLANET TERROR director Robert Rodriguez about rebooting COBRA, Stallone's 1986 action thriller about a tough-on-crime street cop who must protect the only surviving witness to a strange murderous cult with far reaching plans. Stallone wrote the screenplay for COBRA, which he also starred in alongside Brigitte Nielsen and Reni Santoni.

“I’m talking with Robert Rodriguez right now about Cobra, which looks like that could happen,” Stallone revealed. The three seashell slinging actor then added that COBRA could be done "as a series," suggesting that Rodriguez would want to adapt COBRA for the small screen. “It’s basically his baby now,” Stallone said, with regard to handing Rodriguez the keys to COBRA's future. While no further details were spilled like so much blood on a supermarket floor, it's to be thought that Rodriguez would take the COBRA property under his wing via his El Ray Network studio. For the moment, there's no telling if Stallone would reprise his Marion Cabretti character for the project, though one would hope that the leather jacket still fits.

As Fandango's talk with Sly continued, the conversation eventually turned toward his 1989 smash TANGO & CASH. The Andrey Konchalovsky-directed film starred Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell as a mismatched LAPD crime-fighting duo, who after being framed by their ruthless arch-nemesis, must put their differences aside to even the score with the evil kingpin who put them behind bars once and for all.

At the mention of TANGO & CASH, Sly told Fandango, “I would do Tango & Cash in a second.” He then added, “I know, with Kurt [Russell], it’s not about a caper… it’s just us doing our thing.” While there are no official plans for a TANGO & CASH sequel, Stallone says that he's pitched the idea to Russell, but that the ESCAPE FROM L.A. star is very much on the fence about signing up.

“I don’t know, Sly…” Stallone said through a wry smile, recalling what Russell said to him when approached. “… There we were in our prime and now we’re in our unprime, I dunno.” “So I said, Kurt, “I’m telling you, ya gotta go in on this.” So he said, “I’ll talk to you when I get back.”

Back? Where's Russell going? While I haven't a clue as to what Russell meant by that last statement, my fingers are officially crossed that Stallone can convince him to come back for more buddy-cop drama.

Lastly, Fandango asked Sly about returning as Stakar Ogord of the Ravagers for James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. Previous reports have suggested that Stallone's Ogord will play a major part in the events to come, though no plot details have been officially revealed at this time. “James is a man of his word,” Stallone remarked. “I love James, and so if he wants to do it… yeah, it’d be great."

I don't know about you, but it sounds as if everything is coming up Milhouse for old Sly. The man is an unstoppable freight train of talent, and if he has his way, we'll be seeing lots more of him in the years to come. I say bring it on!
