Weekend Box Office Report: An Abominable opening at #1!

Audiences ready for the Yeti!

A creature of legend climbed to the top of the box office this weekend as the animated family feature ABOMINABLE opened in first place with an estimated $20.8 million!

That opening was on the low end of the spectrum for the first weekend of recent DreamWorks Animation releases, about on par with 2017's CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS ($23.8 million) and 2013's TURBO ($21.3 million) but far below the likes of THE BOSS BABY ($50.1 million), TROLLS ($46.5 million), and this year's sequel HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD ($55 million).

The new PG-rated fantasy-adventure, about a Shanghai teen (voiced by Chloe Bennet of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") who discovers a mythical Yeti, cost a reported $75 million.

The quest to return the hairy white beast to his mountain peak home also grabbed $10.2 million from international crowds for a worldwide weekend of $31.1 million.

Critics mostly thought the magical journey with the friendly folklore snow-monster was worth taking, giving the movie an 80% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Chill with the JoBlo review HERE.

Fans of the popular British TV series continued checking in with DOWNTON ABBEY, which moved to second place with $14.5 million.

The continuing drama surrounding the wealthy Crawley family and their servants was missing 53% of business from last weekend's opening. The $20 million visit to the Yorkshire estate has a ten-day domestic total of $58.5 million and a worldwide total of $107.1 million.

The R-rated comedy-drama HUSTLERS danced up two spots to third place with $11.4 million. On its third weekend, Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu's crime scheme has a domestic total $80.6 million and a worldwide total of $95.4 million, on a reported cost of $20 million.

Still floating in fourth place was the R-rated horror sequel IT: CHAPTER TWO with $10.4 million. The $70 million conclusion to the Losers Club's battle with Pennywise the terror-clown has a domestic total of $179.1 million and $417.4 million worldwide on its fourth weekend (the first half of the Stephen King adaptation finished with $700 million worldwide).

The Brad Pitt astronaut drama AD ASTRA was in fifth place with $10.1 million, drifting by 46% from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $35.5 million. Director James Gray's PG-13 sci-fi thriller has a worldwide total of $89 million, on a reported $80 million cost.

In sixth place was the Sylvester Stallone sequel RAMBO: LAST BLOOD with $8.5 million, shot down by 54% from last weekend's opening. The ex-Green Beret's fifth bloody chapter has a ten-day domestic total of $33.1 million and $46.7 million worldwide on a reported $50 million cost.

Opening in seventh place was the Judy Garland biopic JUDY with $3 million.

The PG-13 drama, focusing on the later career of the WIZARD OF OZ star, had the highest per-screen average in the Top 10 despite opening on only around 10% as many screens as the weekend's major new release.

Critics applauded Renee Zellweger's performance as the struggling actor-singer, giving the movie an 84% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Head over the rainbow to the JoBlo review HERE.

The R-rated comedy GOOD BOYS was in eighth place with $2 million as the $20 million Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg production reached a domestic total of $80.3 million and a worldwide total of $104 million over its seventh weekend.

Now prowling the chart for eleven weekends was Disney's THE LION KING remake, in ninth place with $1.6 million. The PG-rated animal animation update has a domestic total of $540 million and a worldwide total of $1.63 billion, on a reported $250 million cost.

Rounding out the list was the R-rated action-thriller ANGEL HAS FALLEN with $1.5 million. After six weekends, Gerard Butler's stabby Secret Service sequel has a domestic total of $67.1 million and $123.9 million worldwide on a reported $40 million cost.

Outside the chart, faith-based drama OVERCOMER was overcome and the Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson/Jason Statham spinoff FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW went speeding toward the horizon.

Next weekend has Batman's nemesis getting a Batman-less origin story as Joaquin Phoenix puts on a smile in the R-rated JOKER, while Natalie Portman goes on a space mission in LUCY IN THE SKY.
