As AQUAMAN became the first film in Warner Bros.' DCEU to gross over $1 billion worldwide, it was only natural that the studio would get the ball rolling on a sequel sooner rather than later. The film followed Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) as he joined forces with Mera (Amber Heard) in order to stop his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) from uniting the kingdoms of Atlantis and declaring war on the surface world. I found myself pleasantly surprised by just how much fun the film was, as it was filled to the brim with colourful worlds, intense action, and crazy characters. According to Jason Momoa, we haven't seen anything yet as the sequel is shaping up to be even bigger.
While speaking with ET Online, the AQUAMAN star teased that "There’s a lot more in store on so many more levels. There’s going to be a lot. It’s way bigger!" Momoa also added that he had brought his own ideas to Warner Bros. for the sequel. "I’m really stoked at the fan base and what we did with the movie and just went into Warner Bros in D.C. and said, 'You know, I have some ideas,'" Momoa said. "And, they love them and James [Wan, director] and everyone is like, 'We’re all taking it in. We’re excited to do another one.'" The actor revealed back in May that they have a "locked" story for the AQUAMAN sequel, so I'm sure things have progressed even further by this point. James Wan is expected to return to helm the sequel, but before he dives back in Atlantis, he's been in production on a new horror film by the title of MALIGNANT which is slated to hit theaters on August 14, 2020. Once Wan finishes up with that film, he'll move onto pre-production on AQUAMAN 2 which has already been slated for a December 16, 2022 release.
Jason Momoa also isn't the only DC superhero in his family now, as his step-daughter, Zoe Kravitz, recently signed on to play Catwoman in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN. "That’s actually the first thing I said to her — 'Your life’s going to change,'" Momoa said. "I’ve been hiding for a good solid 18 years and all of a sudden, Aquaman happened and boom! So, that’s the one thing I don’t even know if I’m prepared for — she’s going to be huge. She’s beautiful, she’s talented. She’s going to kill it and [I’ll be like], 'Well, welcome to the team baby!'"
In addition to the AQUAMAN sequel, Jason Momoa will also be starring in See, an upcoming post-apocalyptic series from Apple TV+ which takes place centuries after a virus has decimated humankind and left its survivors blind. Jason Momoa (AQUAMAN) plays Baba Voss, a warrior and leader of a small tribe. When his wife gives birth to twins with the ability to see, Voss must protect his tribe against a powerful yet desperate queen who believes it's witchcraft and wants the twins destroyed. In addition to See, Momoa is also part of the star-studded cast of Denis Villeneuve's DUNE.
