While light speed skipping across social media outlets in search of Star Wars discussions, you're likely to discover a section of fans who are calling for Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico to receive her own spinoff series on Disney+. The desire for the former Resistance mechanic to star in her own show was sparked after scores of fans became outraged by the character only appearing for 71-seconds worth of screen time in the J.J. Abrams-directed STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. Tico, who was first introduced in Rian Johnson's STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, quickly became a fan favorite character among those who embraced her plucky spirit, inquisitive nature, and seething hatred for the wealthy and corrupt. On the other end of the spectrum, yes, there exists a vocal minority who care not for the character, but I've no desire to discuss their cruel motivations here.
As word of fans wanting a Tico Rose-centric Star Wars spinoff continues to gain traction, it's CRAZY RICH ASIANS and IN THE HEIGHTS director Jon M. Chu who has voiced an interest in helming the would-be series for Disney+.
Ok @disneyplus . Put me in coach. Let’s make this series happen. #RoseTicoDeservedBetter @starwars

To be clear, neither LucasFilm or Disney have announced any plans for a Rose Tico spinoff series at this time. That being said, social media movements are definitely something that studios pay very close attention to. And while many will be keen to wave this call to arms off as just another day in the life of Star Wars culture, it's entirely possible that the powers that be are listening, especially if you have a talented director like Chu raising his hand in support of the concept. The way I see it, this is a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. While one side of the Star Wars fandom would be quick to celebrate the idea of a Rose Tico spinoff, there also exists a subset of fans who would be vehemently opposed to the project. Personally, I'm not sure that Tran would want to reprise her role as Tico, given the abuse she endured after making her Last Jedi debut, as well as being sidelined in Abrams' new film. Only time will tell if Disney and LucasFilm have any interest in exploring the character any further, though it's nice to know that someone like Chu is in full support of the idea.
You can catch Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, which is playing in theaters all across the galaxy right now.
