Frozen 2’s domestic box office freezes past the original

In 2013 Disney's FROZEN 2 thawed the hearts of moviegoers worldwide with its tale of heroism, sisterhood, and hilarious anthropomorphic snowmen. Girls and boys everywhere were utterly under the thrall of Elsa and Anna. "Let It Go" was unavoidable, much to the chagrin of fathers with daughters everywhere, and went on to win Best Song at the Oscars. The animated feature also raked in a pretty penny earning $400.7 million domestically and $1.276 billion worldwide across its run. Well raise a glass with plenty of ice as the sequel has surpassed the original – at least domestically.

It's been just over a month since FROZEN 2 debuted in theaters but never count out the enduring money making power of sequels, as the chilly followup just surged past $400 million at the  domestic box office. For those of you scoring at home that means that the sequel has made more money domestically in just six weeks than the original movie made in its entire theatrical run. It's now the seventh highest grossing animated film of all time and Disney predicts it should soon enter the top five, passing both THE LION KING and TOY STORY 3.

Worldwide the film has made just over $1.161 billion so it still has just over $100 million to go before it bests its predecessor. However, with the holidays now upon us and New Year's just around the corner, there's a good chance FROZEN 2 could lap the original sooner rather than later. It's astounding to me that Disney now has not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, but SIX films that have raked in a billion dollars in 2019 alone. If current box office numbers keep up, STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER will undoubtedly be number seven.

So what do you guys think of these numbers? Are you impressed? Does box office matter to you? Is FROZEN 3 a foregone conclusion at this point? Sound off in the comments below!
