A second season of HBO’s Watchmen looks unlikely

Watchmen, HBO, Damon Lindelof

Like many, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when it was announced that Damon Lindelof would be transforming Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' acclaimed graphic-novel into a television series, but against all odds, the series was met with great enthusiasm. When the nine-episode series wrapped up last month, many were left wondering where Watchmen would go in its second season, but the odds of that actually happening look unlikely.

While speaking at the Television Critics Associations winter press-tour, HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys said that it was up to Damon Lindelof whether or not a second season of Watchmen takes place.

It is really up to Damon at this point, he is thinking about what he wants to do. Truly, I don’t know at this point whether it is a returning drama series or a limited series. I think one of the things Damon did so brilliantly was, he opened up this entire world. So maybe there is another version with a whole new set of characters. I don’t know because Damon doesn’t know, and I’m taking his lead on this.

"If it’s a season two — great, if it’s a new take on the world — great, if it’s something else completely, I’m just going take his lead," Bloys added. Unfortunately, Damon Lindelof told USA Today that he's already told the story he wants to tell and has no interest in pursuing a second season of Watchmen, although he did say that he'd "given my blessing" to HBO if they wanted to tackle a new season with a different writer/producer, but Bloys said that, "It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way." What do you folks think? Is Watchmen best left is as a limited-series? Or would you be open to a True Detective/Fargo-type situation to keep the series going?
