AMC renews Better Call Saul for sixth and final season

Spin-off shows are a tricky thing. Sometimes they can be resounding successes like Frasier. However, you're bound to get an occasional Joey as well. Thankfully, AMC's Better Call Saul (a spinoff of Breaking Bad) has gone the former route. The prequel, which focuses on Saul Goodman the smooth talking, morally flexible eventual lawyer of Walter White, has been a critical hit for the cable network. Better Call Saul has multiple Emmy nominations to its credit and been a true acting showcase for lead actor Bob Odenkirk (LITTLE WOMEN).

Sadly all great shows must come to an end (unless you're The Simpsons apparently) and such is the case with Better Call Saul. Sony Pictures Television just announced that they have renewed Better Call Saul for a sixth and final season. The closing season will consist of thirteen episodes and is slated to begin filming later this year with a release expected for early 2021. Of the decision showrunner and executive producer Peter Gould had this to say:

“From Day 1 of Better Call Saul, my dream was to tell the complete story of our complicated and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill – now AMC and Sony are making that dream come true. We couldn’t be more grateful to the fans and critics who are making this journey possible. Next month we start work on the sixth and final season — we’re going to do our damnedest to stick the landing.”

While I was an enormous fan of Breaking Bad I unfortunately have not had the opportunity to follow Better Call Saul on a consistent basis. I have to admire the hutzpah of AMC, Peter Gould, and Vince Gilligan. To have the stones to do a spinoff show from one of the most beloved and critically successful shows of all time is impressive. As talented an actor as Bob Odenkirk is, I never thought he would be able to carry a show like Better Call Saul. Anyone who still thinks Odenkirk is just the guy from Mr. Show With Bob And David really hasn't been paying attention.
