First teaser for Fast 9 changes the stakes for Vin Diesel and his family

Before Universal Pictures waves a do-rag for the first full-length trailer for FAST & FURIOUS 9 via a star-studded live concert event in Miami this Friday, the studio has unveiled a teaser trailer for the film that shows just how much the stakes have changed for fan-favorite characters Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).

The teaser finds Dom and Letty as the parents of a young boy, the scene presumably taking place just a few years after the events of 2017's THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS. As the trailer plays on, we see that Dom and Letty have retired to a posh cabin in the middle of nowhere, where Dom and his son are busy making repairs to an old tractor. Before long, Letty joins her family out in the yard, a warm smile on her face as she takes stock in the tender moment. In the next scene, Dom and Letty are tucking their young on into his bed, a promise of love and protection being Dom's way of saying goodnight. Before the scene comes to a quiet close, Letty gifts her son the crucifix that Dom had given her some time ago. "I have a gift for you," Letty says in the still of the night. "Daddy gave me this, and now I'm going to give it to you. It's for protection … for what's coming."

Director Justin Lin is returning to helm both the ninth and tenth installments of the Fast franchise, which have been reported to be the final movies in this main series. Should this prove to be true, that would make FAST & FURIOUS 9 the penultimate chapter of the high-octane and action-oriented series.

FAST & FURIOUS 9 brings back many series veterans, including Nathalie Emmanuel. The rest of the cast includes Jordana BrewsterTyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and newcomer John Cena. Other members of past movies — Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham — are not back for this outing and are instead living it up with their own movie, FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW.

In addition to the teaser, Universal also dropped a new poster for the upcoming film, which you can check out for yourself below. Meanwhile, FAST & FURIOUS 9 will put the pedal to the metal in theaters on April 8, 2020.
