Carrie Coon, Ghostbusters: Afterlife

After the GHOSTBUSTERS reboot failed to relaunch the franchise several years ago, Sony abandoned their plans for a sequel and decided that the next film would link directly to the original films. Enter GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, which takes place thirty years after GHOSTBUSTERS II and revolves around a single mom (Carrie Coon) and her two kids (Finn Wolfhard & McKenna Grace) who discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters after they move into a mysterious house in a small town.

The first trailer for GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE was released late last year, and most seemed pretty happy with what they saw as it featured plenty of direct references and nods to the originals; in fact, Carrie Coon told IndieWire that the film is really just a big ol' love letter to the original franchise.

I think the original script was really innovative. I don’t think anybody had seen anything quite like it before. It sort of launched a genre; there’s this comic sci-fi genre. Really, it was one of the first of its kind. Now we’ve had so many of those films. I think what’s remarkable that Jason [Reitman] has done is… a real love letter to the franchise.

With GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE set to feature appearances from many of the original cast members, including Bill Murray (Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stanz), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett), and Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz), it seems that the film really will connect to the originals in a way which the reboot could not. Carrie Coon went on to tease that GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE is a "family story" which is "very funny" and "very warm."

The official synopsis for GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE:

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE will hit theaters on July 10, 2020.
