Yesterday Searchlight Pictures (it's still so weird not to add the "Fox" portion) unveiled the first poster for director Wes Anderson's upcoming film THE FRENCH DISPATCH. However, let's be honest, a poster is merely the delicious soup before the main course. What audiences really hunger for is something substantiative – the movie trailer. Well after waiting about twenty-four hours between the salad and the steak, audiences finally have their first taste of THE FRENCH DISPATCH and it's certainly…something.
All the elements of a classic Wes Anderson film lie within this trailer. We've got Robert Yeoman's signature cinematography. We've got what promises to be another great score from Alexandre Desplat. We've got Anderson's wry humor. And of course we have a cast so rich in talent it is borderline nauseating.
I know I'm getting way ahead of myself here and it's probably just Oscar hangover, but could this be the film that finally rewards Wes Anderson at the Academy Awards next year? Are we looking at a future Best Picture nominee, perhaps even the winner? Anderson is truly a singular and unique talent among modern filmmakers and I'd love to see him get the accolades from the Academy he so richly deserves. Either way I just hope it's a great movie!
