The Invisible Man hides in first place!
A modern twist on a classic Universal monster showed up on top at the box office this weekend as THE INVISIBLE MAN opened with an estimated $29 million!
The new R-rated variation of the H.G. Wells tale, with Elisabeth Moss menaced by her abusive (and now imperceptible) ex, also frightened $20.2 million from international audiences for a worldwide weekend of $49.2 million.
Directed by SAW co-creator Leigh Whannell and also featuring Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen as the transparent antagonist, the Blumhouse production (released by Universal) only cost a reported $7 million.

After running around in first place for two weeks, the PG-rated video game adaptation SONIC THE HEDGEHOG jogged down to second place with $16 million.
Paramount's comedy with James Marsden, villain Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz voicing the blue speedster has a domestic total of $128.2 million and $224.7 million worldwide, on a reported cost of $85 million.
In third place was the period adventure THE CALL OF THE WILD with $13.2 million as Harrison Ford and his computer-generated hound lost 47% of business from last weekend's opening.
20th Century Studios' PG-rated adaptation of Jack London's novel has a ten-day domestic total of $45.8 million and a worldwide total of $79.2 million, on a reported cost of $135 million.
The new PG-13 anime movie MY HERO ACADEMIA: HEROES RISING was in fourth place with $5 million for the weekend, and has collected $8.4 million since it opened on Wednesday. Based on the popular superhero manga and animated series, the FUNimation feature has a worldwide total of $15.1 million.
In fifth place was the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence sequel BAD BOYS FOR LIFE with $4.3 million. The Sony action movie is taking aim at $200 million domestic on it seventh weekend as it also crossed $400 million worldwide (nearly the combined global totals of the previous two BAD BOYS movies), on a reported $90 million cost.
The DC Comics adaptation BIRDS OF PREY was in sixth place with $4.1 million, bringing the R-rated exploits of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn to a domestic total of $78.7 million. After four weekends, the Warner Bros. release has a worldwide total of $188.3 million on a reported cost of $84.5 million.
In seventh place was IMPRACTICAL JOKERS: THE MOVIE with $3.5 million as it expanded to 1900 screens after a debut last week in limited release.
Spinning off from the TruTV prank show (itself based on a UK series), the PG-13 comedy feature has a ten-day domestic total of $6.6 million on a reported cost of $3 million.
Director Sam Mendes' World War I thriller 1917 was in eighth place with $2.6 million. The R-rated Universal drama has a domestic total of $155.8 million and $362.3 million worldwide, on a reported $90 million cost.
The PG-13 horror sequel BRAHMS: THE BOY II was in ninth place with $2.6 million, scaring off 55% of business from its opening last weekend. The second creepy-doll movie has a ten-day domestic total of $9.7 million and $16.1 million worldwide, on a reported cost of $10 million.
At the bottom was the PG-13 TV-show remake FANTASY ISLAND with $2.3 million on its third weekend. The $7 million Sony-released Blumhouse production has a domestic total of $24 million and a worldwide total of $40.4 million.
Outside the chart, filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winner PARASITE went down to the basement along with romance THE PHOTOGRAPH, while adventure sequel JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL finally escaped after three months in the Top 10.
In limited release, the PG-rated Jane Austen comedy-drama EMMA. added 92 screens for a $1.1 million weekend, giving it a domestic total of $1.4 million before it goes wide next week.
Next weekend begins a new month with Pixar's new fantasy ONWARD,the Ben Affleck sports drama THE WAY BACK and the expansion of EMMA., while limited releases include the thriller THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY and the period drama FIRST COW.
