Sony Pictures developing live-action film based on One Punch Man manga

One Punch Man, Sony Pictures

Most studios live and breathe through their franchises, and Sony Pictures is looking to add a new one in the form of ONE PUNCH MAN, a live-action adaptation of the massively popular manga series created by writer/artist One.

Variety reports that Sony Pictures have tapped Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, best known for penning JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, VENOM, and JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL, with writing the script for the new film. The story of "One Punch Man" follows "Saitama, a superhero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch but seeks to find a worthy opponent after growing bored by a lack of challenges in his fight against evil." The manga series originated as a web-comic back in 2009 and later spawned a critically acclaimed anime TV series, a video-game for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, as well as a mobile-game for Android and iOS. Variety says that Sony Pictures is "very high on the property given its popularity and the possibility of adding another franchise to the pipeline." Hollywood doesn't always have the best track record when it comes to live-action adaptations of manga or anime, and you only need to look at reviews for films such as DEATH NOTE and GHOST IN THE SHELL to understand why. Here's hoping ONE PUNCH MAN fares better.
