"Six seasons and a movie." For several years, that was the rallying cry of Community's passionate fan-base. The comedy series seemed to be perpetually on the bubble, but fans kept the series alive year after year. Although Community did miraculously survived for six seasons, a feature-film has yet to materialize. The series recently began streaming on Netflix, and there's hope that this will spark renewed interest in a Community movie.
Before taking off as the directors of the biggest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME, Joe and Anthony Russo helmed multiple episodes of Community, and Joe Russo spoke with Collider about whether a Community movie will actually happen.
We’d certainly be willing to do it. We love our Community family. That cast, we’re all still very close to all of them. It’d certainly be schedule-depending for us. But I believe there will be a Community movie, especially now that it’s doing so well on streaming. Someone like Netflix could step up and make that movie.
As many of the cast have since become part of the Netflix family, including Joel McHale and Alison Brie, it stands to reason that the streaming giant would be the best bet at getting the band back together for a feature-film adventure. Although there's the temptation to throw more money at the screen for a feature outing, Joe Russo says that part of what makes Community so special are its low-budget roots. "I don’t think you’d want to see it with a really big budget," Russo said. "Part of what is so compelling about the show is that it’s very quaint, it’s Greendale as an underdog. I don’t think you’d want to suddenly execute it with crazy high production value and set design. Unless we were going somewhere fantastical or doing one of our genre exploration concepts. But I think you’d easily pull that movie off for a budget."
EXTRACTION, which was produced by Joe and Anthony Russo and written by Joe, will debut on Netflix on April 24th. The next film with the Russo's in the director's chair will be CHERRY, a crime drama which stars Tom Holland as an Army medic with PTSD who becomes addicted to opioids and starts robbing banks to pay for the addiction.
