In Legendary's MonsterVerse, Godzilla has been alive for hundreds of thousands of years prior to his first appearance in the 2014 film, which could potentially set the stage for plenty of prehistoric adventures with the giant Titan. While taking part in a quarantine re-watch of GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS on Twitter, director Michael Dougherty expressed his desire to one day helm a film exploring those (very) early years.
I love the idea that Godzilla and the other Titans go back thousands if not millions of years and were the original rulers of the planet, and I wanted the logos and Titans depicted as ancient hieroglyphs to hint at that theme.

As for how Ghidorah ended up trapped in the ice, I like to think he lost his last battle with Godzilla and got KO’d into freezing waters.

I’d still love to do GODZILLA B.C. where we finally see this ancient world of man and monster, like a modern day Ray Harryhausen flick. Or maybe we just go for it and finally take humans out of the equation…. #Monsterversewatchalong #NerdistAtHome

Michael Dougherty Godzilla Idea Still Unlikely
That would be amazing, but I can't see it ever happening, particularly with no humans in the equation; the studio probably wouldn't go for it. That said, for Michael Dougherty Godzilla already teases that Monarch, the cryptozoological organization which studies the Titans, has "been around in some form since the 40s so I love that they’re sitting on decades of knowledge and discoveries about the Titans. There are so many potential stories and adventures from different eras to be told…" If the stars do indeed align one day, would you like to see a prehistoric Godzilla film?
While GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS turned out to be something of a box-office disappointment, the MonsterVerse will continue on with GODZILLA VS. KONG, which was directed by Adam Wingard (YOU'RE NEXT). Here's the official logline: "In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever." The film, which stars Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Zhang Ziyi, Demian Bichir, and Julian Dennison, is currently slated for a November 20, 2020 release.
