Sweet Tooth, Netflix, TV

Netflix has given an eight-episode series order to Sweet Tooth, a new live-action drama which is based on Jeff Lemire's DC Vertigo comic of the same name. Described as family friendly and broad in appeal, Sweet Tooth will follow "the storybook adventures of Gus — part deer, part boy — who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins." I'm not at all familiar with the comic-series, but based on the enthusiastic reaction of my colleague, Steve Seigh, I'd imagine that there are a few of you out there who might be just as pumped.

Jim Mickle (Hap and Leonard) and Ben Schwartz (Arrow) are slated to pen the script, executive produce, and serve as showrunners, with Schwartz also directing. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey will produce thru their Team Downey shingle, and the cast has already been selected with Christian Convery (BEAUTIFUL BOY), Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones), Adeel Akhtar (THE BIG SICK), and Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) set to star, and James Brolin (Life in Pieces) serving as the show's narrator. This isn't the first time that Sweet Tooth has been developed for television, as Hulu ordered a pilot back in 2018 which wasn't picked up. That pilot was also produced by Team Downey, with Mickle writing and directing.
