HBO has released a new trailer for I'll Be Gone in the Dark, a six-part true-crime documentary series which is based on the book of the same name by Michelle McNamara. The late writer spent years investigating the dark world of a violent predator dubbed the Golden State Killer, a serial killer, rapist, and burglar who was responsible for at least 13 murders, more than 50 rapes, and over 100 burglaries in California from 1974 to 1986.
Unfortunately, Michelle McNamara passed away in her sleep in 2016, leaving her research and novel incomplete. McNamara's husband, Patton Oswalt, enlisted the help of crime-writer Paul Haynes and investigative journalist Billy Jensen to help complete the manuscript. "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" was published posthumously in February 2018, and just two months later, an arrest was made with DNA evidence pointing to former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo. I'll Be Gone in the Dark will use exclusive original recordings and excerpts from the book read by Amy Ryan, as well as archival footage, police files, and new interviews with detectives, survivors, and family members of the killer in order to weave together a picture of the investigation.
I'll Be Gone in the Dark is slated to debut on HBO on June 28, 2020.
