Although David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD wasn't everyone's cup of tea (it definitely has its fans though), the DCEU film's performance at the box-office meant that Warner Bros. felt confident enough to move forward with a sequel. James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2) stepped in to replace Ayer on the sequel, which largely features an all-new cast; however, there are a few members of the original who will be reprising their roles for the sequel, including Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney.

While speaking with Variety recently, Jai Courtney touched upon how THE SUICIDE SQUAD differs from its predecessor. "I think it’s kind of got a different flavor," Courtney said. "There’s a whole bunch of new characters. James Gunn has an approach to things that is uniquely his; he pulls a lot of that into the 'Suicide Squad' world. And I think that it fits really well, and audiences are going to have a lot of fun with it." Courtney obviously couldn't say much about the upcoming sequel, but he did tease that the film will feature a sequence which involved the use of a water tank.

I won’t to say too much, but there’s a particular sequence when I get very wet, and a few other people do, and hilarity ensued when it came to that. When you’re spending hours upon hours in a water tank with a bunch of people treading water, and you’ve got Styrofoam stuffed into every crevice of your costume to try and take the load off and because it’s 4 a.m., it gets quite ridiculous…. I am lucky that sometimes I’m making these small-budget gritty dramas like 'Stateless,' and sometimes I’m out shooting big ridiculous action comedies like 'Suicide Squad.' To have feet on both of those trains is a lot of fun — and it also means that I never get tired of it.

New additions to the cast of THE SUICIDE SQUAD include Idris Elba, John Cena, Nathan Fillion, David Dastmalchian, Michael Rooker, Storm Reid, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi, and more. THE SUICIDE SQUAD is slated for an August 6, 2021 release, and once Gunn completes work on the film, it's expected that he'll shift his attentions back to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, but all of that depends on where the COVID-19 pandemic takes us.
