SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this August, was not an immediate hit upon release. It's definitely a film that gained cult status after its run in theaters but one tweet from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane about the film placing fifth at the box office during its opening weekend made Wright not too fond of Mr. MacFarlane.
During a chat with "Entertainment Weekly", Wright said he was very irked by a Twitter diss that MacFarlane lobbed out at the film's expense:
"It opened at number five. It's that thing where it becomes a bit of a punch line. I've never liked Seth MacFarlane because that weekend he tweeted "Scoot Pilgrim 0, the World 2." I was like, f*ck you. And I lay in wait until 8 Million Ways to Die in the West came out, or whatever it was called, and I rubbed my hands with glee. I didn't tweet anything because I'm not a total monster. But Monday morning Michael Moses sent an email with three words. It was one of the sweetest emails I've ever gotten from anybody in the industry. It said, "Years, not days."
Wright took the higher road and years later his hard work on the film did pay off because SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD has garnered legions of fans since its original release and I don't think that's something that EIGHT MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST can claim on its end. SCOTT PILGRIM also opened the same weekend as THE EXPENDABLES, which placed first at the box office, and Wright feels vindicated that "Entertainment Weekly" is doing a write-up on SCOTT PILGRIM ten years later and not the all-star action film starring Sylvester Stallone:
"I'm incredibly proud of the movie. The fact that you're not doing a 10th-anniversary article about The Expendables says it all."
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD is based on the graphic novel series "Scott Pilgrim" by Bryan Lee O'Malley and stars Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. In the film, Pilgrim is a slacker musician who must win a competition to get a record deal, and battle seven evil exes of his newest girlfriend Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The movie also stars Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Mae Whitman, Anna Kendrick, Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, Jason Schwartzman, and Brie Larson. Although the film was a box office disappointment, grossing $31.5 million on a $60 million budget, critics loved the film as it carries a fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes of 82% and it has since gained a huge cult following.
