Patty Jenkins on Wonder Woman’s fierce origin, spinoffs, and sequel ideas

When director Patty Jenkins welcomes Princess Diana back to the screen for WONDER WOMAN 1984, she's bringing a battalion of Amazons as well as concepts for spinoffs and sequels as a part of her arsenal of ideas.

Recently while speaking with Empire for their Big-Screen Preview issue, Jenkins revealed that part of her new film will see characters returning to the Amazon Olympics, which is something that she's always wanted to see up on the big screen.

“What I love about the Amazon Olympics is everything that we got to celebrate in the first movie,” Jenkins told Empire. “Here are these people who are incredibly powerful and capable, but different in how they approach things. If you’ve been training for hundreds of years because of an impending invasion, you’re going to be constantly working on all these skill sets. So, to me, every year, they would have these Olympics to see who’s doing the best on horses or swimming the fastest, and seeing new tricks people have figured out.”

Oh wow! I would give anything to borrow Bill and Ted's time machine so that I can go back for a round of the Amazon Olympics. Imagine the carnage, the passion, and the epic battle cries. Just thinking about it makes the hairs on my arms stand up on end. And yeah, an event such as this would certainly be a wonderful way to determine your greatest warriors as well as where they'd work best on the battlefield.

In talking more about the adult Diana and her future as a part of DC's Trinity of heroes, Jenkins also revealed to the outlet that an animated series focused on the Amazons is up for consideration. Moreover, an Amazon-focused spinoff is also in the cards that would be “part of the in-world story of Wonder Woman.” Ah, but if you think that Jenkins is ready to stop there, think again! The director also has ideas for a third Wonder Woman film with Gadot continuing to play the Amazonian Warrior Princess. “You’re enjoying the movie you’re making and also reflecting on what could be different or better in the [real] world. And therefore what story you want to tell,” said Jenkins. “That’s the greatest thing to me about superhero stories. You’re able to have a dialogue about what a hero would be right now. So yes, I have ideas for what I’d like to say, and Gal does too.”

Spinoffs? A third film in the Wonder Woman franchise? Oh, Patty, why must you tease us so when we've yet to see Diana's 1980s-style adventure? One mind-blowing battle at a time, please! My heart can only handle so much!

Oh, with all this excitement going on I'd almost forgotten. In addition to debuting some new details about WONDER WOMAN 1984, Empire also released a new still from the film that shows a young Diana competing in the Amazon Olympics. Check out the mug on this one, eh? I wouldn't want to be at the end of that spear, that's for sure.

For the moment, WONDER WOMAN 1984 is hoping to charge into theaters on October 2, 2020. That said, the coronavirus pandemic still poses a threat to moviegoers and there's no telling how long theaters will have to remain closed. Here's hoping that the tide turns in humanity's favor sooner rather than later so that we can all celebrate Wonder Woman's return in comfort and safety.
