Train to Busan sequel Peninsula will be heading to theaters this August

While I'm not certain how many people are ready to escape the real-life pandemic situation with a movie about a fictional pandemic situation, but it's happening nonetheless. Director Yeon Sang-ho's excellent TRAIN TO BUSAN took place as a zombie apocalypse broke out in South Korea, and Yeon's follow-up returns to that now completely decimated world four years down the line. PENINSULA will follow Jung-seok, a former soldier who has managed to escape overseas but is given a mission to return to the devastated Korean peninsula and unexpectedly meets up with survivors.

PENINSULA is slated to be released in the U.S. and Canada by Well Go USA Entertainment, and it was announced today that the film will be hitting 150 screens across North America on August 7, 2020. Additionally, Well Go is also looking to re-release TRAIN TO BUSAN in theaters later this month, and that release will feature an exclusive first-look at PENINSULA. Not only that, but they've also landed an exclusive streaming deal with Shudder, AMC's horror-centric streaming service, with PENINSULA slated to debut on the service in early 2021. In a statement, Shudder's general manager Craig Engler said, "Peninsula is one of the most anticipated horror movie sequels of the last decade and exactly the kind of film Shudder members are hungry for. Yeon Sang-ho set the bar for zombie movies with Train to Busan and its prequel Seoul Station, and we’re thrilled to be the home of his new masterpiece—and the only place where movie lovers will be able to stream this outstanding trilogy together." While I'm certainly excited to check out PENINSULA, I'm not sure I'll be heading to the theater to see it just yet.

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.
