Jurnee Smollett-Bell made her debut as Black Canary earlier this year in BIRDS OF PREY and while the film was well-received by critics, the film's so-so box office puts into a question whether or not we'll see some of the new characters introduced in that film in a future movie. That being said, if another film does happen, Smollett-Bell says she would "absolutely" come back to sing as Black Canary once again.
While speaking with "Entertainment Weekly", the actress expressed a strong desire to reprise the role in the DC Extended Universe:
"It's no secret how much I loved playing Black Canary, and [I was] so honored to take on that mantle. I would absolutely do it again if given a chance."
Smollett-Bell also spoke highly of working with JOHN WICK co-director Chad Stahelski and the 87Eleven stunt team. They were brought in to spruce up some of the film's action scenes and the actress also revealed she would be down to work with them once again as well:
Hell yeah! I love the 87eleven team and Chad. I would love to actually work with Chad, that's for sure on my bucket list. He has such a gift for telling the narrative through these really inventive action sequences. The chance to work with 87eleven and do these things, yes, absolutely, absolutely."
I don't really have my finger on the pulse on the fans on this one because I enjoyed her in the role but I have a feeling there might have been issues with the portrayal being wholly comic book accurate. I thought she displayed strong screen presence and displayed great chemistry with her co-stars but given the overall reception of BIRDS OF PREY, I'm not sure Warner Bros. will explore any of these characters again. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is returning in James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD but no word on if we'll be seeing Black Canary or The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) or Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) again.
