The New Mutants’ Charlie Heaton thinks they won’t fit into the MCU

THE NEW MUTANTS finally hits screens on August 28 after a three-year delay that has seen the film attached to numerous release dates. It's hard to really think of the brand's future given the fact that we have yet to set our eyes on their debut but some fans have been curious if THE NEW MUTANTS could fit in the greater MCU since the film is the last of the 20th Century Fox Marvel content after the Fox/Disney merger. One of the film's stars, Charlie Heaton, breaks down their future in the MCU and he doesn't seem to think we will see them in future MCU content.

During a chat with "ScreenRant", Charlie Heaton, who plays Cannonball in the film, said that even though they technically belong in the same shared universe, he does not see the characters from the film crossing over into the larger MCU any time soon:

"This really feels so its own world. It's really hard to see them stood next to the MCU heroes. They just don't compare. These are kids doing the best with what they have."

THE NEW MUTANTS is a horror-influenced comic book tale of a group of teens with special abilities who are kept in a government facility, ostensibly to help them gain control of their powers, but it may turn out that they will find themselves at the center of a sinister conspiracy. Given the different aesthetic of this comic book adaptation, director Josh Boone also believes that the tone of his film would not gel with the other live-action Marvel properties:

"It would be really weird in this movie if Wolverine showed up. They're sort of in their own tonal space, and the aesthetic space is sort of its own thing. So, it'd be weird and interesting to see them kind of with other characters. But to me, if fans love it, we'd certainly love to make another one."

Since the first trailer for THE NEW MUTANTS was released in 2017, it has long been teased that the film may be a full-fledged horror movie rather than an action-adventure saga. This makes it easy to understand why Boone and others involved with the film would not see their movie fitting in with the more family-friendly tone of the typical MCU films. Boone has previously revealed that he hopes to turn THE NEW MUTANTS if given the chance and that could be the route they go if the film proves to be successful:

"They were supposed to be kind of separate horror genre films: the first one's like a rubber reality horror movie, the second one was supposed to be an alien invasion movie with Warlock, and then the third one was going to take all these elements from the X-Men crossover from the late '80s and early '90s called Inferno to be a kind of supernatural, apocalyptic horror movie. That was the plan."

The final say in this all comes down to Disney and I honestly think that things are so planned out for down the line that there may not even be room for THE NEW MUTANTS to become proper MCU canon. It would be interesting to add an aesthetic like THE NEW MUTANTS to spice up the world of the MCU but there is a sense that this brand isn't grand enough to fit into the universe.

THE NEW MUTANTS, starring Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga, hits screens on August 28…hopefully. Do YOU think THE NEW MUTANTS could fit into the greater MCU?
