Jamie Foxx to play Electro opposite Tom Holland in Spider-Man 3

If it wasn't 2020, I would assume that writing this article would be an April Fools' joke, but it seems to be legit: Jamie Foxx will reprise his role as the villain Electro for Sony and Marvel's third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming series.

Now, you are likely scratching your head like I am. How could this be happening? Was The Hollywood Reporter duped into posting fake news? Are dogs and cats living together? Is this a call for mass hysteria? The answer could lie in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. While Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio lied about the Multiverse, the Marvel Comics parallel universe plot device was confirmed in the title of the studio's upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. Could Electro be crossing into the MCU from an alternate dimension? Hell, they've already done it with J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, right?

Foxx first starred as the villain Electro in the Andrew Garfield-starring THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Story details are being kept under a pile of hardened web-fluid at this time, but the news of Foxx's return is undoubtedly … wait for it … a real shocker!

For the moment, the third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming series is expected to web-swing into theaters on November 5, 2021, though I would not be surprised if the film gets pushed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Yup, that old chestnut. Still derailing films like it ain't no thang.

Marvel has yet to comment on Foxx's return to the franchise, though we do know that several players from the previous films are also expected to return, including Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, and Tom Holland, of course.

If you ask me, bringing Foxx back for another round makes total sense. Especially if Marvel is hoping to launch a Sinister Six movie sometime down the line. Why waste valuable time reestablishing the character when you can just pipe Foxx's version into the fold in some cool way? It'll be interesting to see how this news is received given that plenty of people thought THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 was made using the weakest of sauce. I mean, it wasn't all bad, but it certainly didn't web-up an overwhelming amount of praise either. Perhaps bringing Foxx into the new setup is a great way to capitalize on one of the more contentious aspects of that film?
