Netflix passes on series based on Mark Millar’s The Magic Order

Those of you looking forward to Netflix's adaptation of Mark Millar's "The Magic Order" will be disappointed to learn that Deadline has reported that Netflix has decided to pass on the series. The comic was created by Mark Millar and illustrated by Oliver Coipel and revolved around "five families of magicians sworn to protect our world must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day they live among us as our neighbors, friends and co-workers, but by night they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness — unless the darkness gets them first."

The Magic Order was slated to be directed by André Øvredal (SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK) and executive produced by James Wan (AQUAMAN) and Lindsey Beer (CHAOS WALKING). Casting had not yet begun, but scripts had been written and it was expected that production would kick off in Prague next year. Deadline says that Netflix is still very keen on The Magic Order, but that the "large scope of the project and the global uncertainty amid the pandemic" played a part in their choice not to move forward with the series. It's possible that Netflix will revisit The Magic Order at a later date, but for now, it's off the table.

Although The Magic Order isn't going to happen anytime soon, Mark Millar still has several projects in the works at Netflix, and the first to launch will be Jupiter's Legacy, which follows the story of "the world's first superheroes, who received their powers in the 1930s. In the present day, they're the revered elder guard, but their superpowered children struggle to live up to the legendary feats of their parents." The series stars Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, and Matt Lanter, and is expected to launch in 2021.
