The Suicide Squad plot details hint at an epic prison battle

THE SUICIDE SQUAD is one of the more anticipated comic-book movies out there, especially as many as interested to see what brand of craziness GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY writer/director James Gunn will be bringing to the DCEU. The upcoming film will feature quite the ensemble cast of new and returning characters, many of whom probably won't make it past the credits, but the film is also going to be a hell of a lot bigger than anyone anticipated.

In the new edition of Empire Magazine (via /Film), James Gunn teased some SUICIDE SQUAD plot details, hinting it will be much bigger than the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movies, especially as it will feature far more practical effects.

It was becoming more and more bluescreen on my other movies, an it sort of bums me out a little bit to be spending three weeks on a set that is just a few painted purple rocks. But The Suicide Squad is a big film with so many practical effects. We were really building giant sets.

Warner Bros. executives apparently told THE SUICIDE SQUAD producer Peter Safran that the film is "the largest construction project on any movie [we've] ever done." Safran also revealed a few plot details about the upcoming film, part of which will take place on a Latin American island called Corto Maltese. "There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place," said Safran. We've caught a glimpse at this location in the behind-the-scenes trailer for the film, and it does look like it will be quite the epic battle. Gunn also added that they were "crushing cars, we're blowing up tons of stuff, we're doing tons of squibs… we could do whatever we wanted." I'm looking forward to it. THE SUICIDE SQUAD is slated to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
