HBO Max: Amazon Fire TV will finally be supported on the streamer

If you're like me, when HBO Max launched I ran into a bit of a problem because I have a Roku TV and Amazon Fire TV. The platform did not reach a deal with the two entities to be housed on those services and I had to buy a Google Chromecast in order to cast HBO Max to my TV. While HBO Max has yet to strike a deal with Roku, the streamer has FINALLY come to terms with Amazon Fire TV and will be available via that platform Tuesday, November 17, 2020.

HBO Max coming to a deal with Amazon Fire TV will bring WarnerMedia to Amazon’s more than 40 million active Fire TV users. Tony Goncalves, Head of Sales and Distribution for WarnerMedia, had this to say about the deal:

"We are very excited that Amazon customers will now be able to enjoy the best-in-class content that lives within HBO Max. Our continued goal is to make HBO Max and its unparalleled content available to customers across all the devices they love. Fire TV is a favorite among customers and we look forward to working with the Amazon team to engage and grow our existing subscriber base by showcasing all that HBO Max has to offer."

Immediately upon launch, current subscribers of HBO through Amazon’s Prime Video Channels will be able to log in to the HBO Max app with their Amazon credentials at no additional cost. The HBO app on Fire TV and Fire tablets will automatically update to become the HBO Max app; customers will be able to log in using their existing HBO credentials. New customers can also subscribe to HBO Max directly in the app. Additionally, all existing HBO Max customers, regardless of how they subscribe to the platform, can now access all of HBO Max via supported Fire TV and Fire tablet devices using their existing provider credentials.

This is a big move for HBO Max since there were a lot of complaints that consumers could not get the app on their Amazon Fire TV or Roku. For now, HBO Max remains unavailable on the Roku platform, which counts 46 million active accounts for its devices. That being said, for the 40 million active Fire TV users, this could mean that there will be more incentive for them to get HBO Max if they were on the fence before. It will be interesting to see how much HBO Max's subscriber numbers will rise once it fully gets going on Amazon.
