Landscape with Invisible Hand: Tiffany Haddish to star in MGM sci-fi epic

After solidifying her reputation as a queen of the comedy scene, Tiffany Haddish is looking to land her first major role sci-fi role. According to Deadline, the project is called Landscaping With Invisible Hand, which is based on the National Book Award-winning novel of the same name by M.T. Anderson. Set to be directed and written by Cory Finley (Bad Education), the project has been likened to films such as District 9 and The Truman Show.

Published in 2017, Landscaping With Invisible Hand depicts a near-future in which an alien species known as the Vuvv has taken over Earth. After the Vuvv’s labor-saving technology causes Earth’s job market and the global economy to collapse, a teenager and his girlfriend cook up a way to make much-needed money by broadcasting their dating life to the fascinated aliens. Unfortunately, things go badly when, over time, the two teens come to hate each other and can’t break up without bankrupting their families.

Haddish is currently in the final stages of the negotiation process to join the film, which is a joint venture between MGM, Plan B, and Annapurna. Plans are for the movie to be released in theaters across the U.S. via United Artists Releasing. Plan B will produce.

Landscaping With Invisible Hand is wildly different from anything Haddish has participated in so far, making this an intriguing project indeed. Personally, I think it's fun to see actors work outside of their comfort zone, and there's no telling what Haddish will bring to the sci-fi arena once Finley's latest film is released. While the concept for the film has me scratching my head a bit, it certainly does sound unique, and I welcome anything that taps into new ideas for a well-worn genre.
