Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead to direct episodes of Moon Knight on Disney+

Marvel's Disney+ series Moon Knight has picked up additional directors. It has been announced that Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will direct several episodes of the series that will star Oscar Isaac.

Benson and Moorhead are indie genre filmmakers best known for the sci-fi horror movies The Endless and Synchronic. The duo will join Mohamed Diab, the Egyptian filmmaker behind the Middle Eastern drama Clash. Snagging Benson and Moorhead continues Marvel's trend of banking on the talents of indie filmmakers to take their projects to the next level. Diab will act as the showrunner of the series and will direct a sizeable amount of the episodes while Benson and Moorhead will also direct several episodes. Umbrella Academy's Jeremy Slater is leading the writer's room for the series and the show is expected to begin shooting in Budapest starting in March.  

The Moon Knight character has had several different takes since his debut in 1975's "Werewolf by Night" #32. He is primarily known as Marc Spector, an ex-Marine turned mercenary whose multiple alter egos allow him to adequately fight crime. The alternate personalities include cabbie Jake Lockley and millionaire playboy Steven Grant. In later comics, the character was established as being a conduit for the Egyptian moon god Knonshu and recently he was a consultant who dresses in all white and goes by the name Mr. Knight. Considering how many angles the Disney+ show could take, it will be interesting to see which direction the series will go.

Benson and Moorhead are known for doing all the heavy lifting on their movies, including writing, acting, directing, producing, and editing. The dup earned raves and a following on the film festival circuit for their low budget horror movies, beginning with Resolution in 2013. Their 2014 film Spring premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and that led to them gaining a fan in director Guillermo del Toro. Their latest film, Synchronic, premiered at 2019's TIFF before being released this year. The sci-fi thriller stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan.
