A project that has been bouncing around Hollywood since writer Darren Lemke first pitched the concept in 1997, GEMINI MAN drew the attention of directors Tony Scott, Curtis Hanson, and Joe Carnahan over the years, with Harrison Ford, Chris O'Donnell, Mel Gibson, and Clint Eastwood being considered to play the lead role(s). Now it has finally emerged from development hell and is coming to the screen with Ang Lee at the helm, Will Smith in the lead, and modern technology making it possible.
GEMINI MAN had been tough to figure out previously because it's about a man fighting a younger version of himself. The story follows
an aging assassin who finds himself in a battle with the ultimate opponent: his clone, who is 25 years younger and at the peak of his abilities.
Lemke, David Benioff, and Billy Ray receive screenplay credit on the film, which has been produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger.
I'm actually glad it took more than twenty years for this movie to be made, since we now have the digital de-aging technology that allows Smith to play both versions of his character; the assassin his own age and the younger clone. A trailer has been released online to show us how this all works out in the finished film, and that trailer can be seen embedded below.
GEMINI MAN also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, and Benedict Wong.
